Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman
In this book the house itself is a character. It starts with it being built. Of course the book is also about the people who live in the house over the course of years, many, many years. I will admit, it's a little dark. It seems everyone who lives in that house is touched by some kind of tragedy. Still, I like Alice Hoffman's writing. She adds a sense of mystery and writes incredibly engaging characters.
