Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

This book begins in Ethiopia and travels to Boston. Sister Mary Joseph Praise and Dr. Stone work very closely in the surgery at a hospital for the poor in Ethiopia. The Sister becomes pregnant by Dr. Stone. Twin boys are born, but Sister dies in childbirth and Dr. Stone cannot come to terms with what has happened and runs away. The identical twins, Shiva and Marion, look alike, but the similarity ends there. The book is the story of their lives and how they perceive of and react to circumstances presented to them. A moving story, I had trouble putting it down. Highly recommended!
