A Blaze of Glory: the Battle of Shiloh by Jeff Shaara
This fascinating tale is another fine example of a missed Confederate opportunity to stem the tide of Union victories in the Western theater. Southern General Johnston had the Yankees on the run at Pittsburg Landing near the Shiloh church after the bloodletting the first day. Johnston is mortally wounded, but subordinate General Pierre G T Beauregard pronounces the battle all but over. The ensuing delay provides ample time for the Union forces to regroup under Grant and Sherman and fortified by Carlos Buell.
"Get Tough" Beauregard languishes the second day allowing the enemy to rally.
Author Shaara always delights with not only the travails of the leaders in his historical renditions but delves into the minds of the fighting grunts to provide valuable insight.
