In 1938 a Viennese Jewess, Elise Landau, prepares to leave Austria to become a parlor maid at Tyneford, an estate in the countryside of England. But the world is changing and war is inevitable in England.

The author really has a way of drawing you into this era of time with her descriptive writing and realistic characters. Also a splash of humor spread throughout helps to make this a good read.
