The Moon-Spinners by Mary Stewart
Some books are just like old friends. Mary Stewart's The Moon-Spinners is like that for me. My mother and older sister turned me on to Mary Stewart when I was a teen. Likeable heroines, exotic locales, unusual plot twists--- Mary Stewart mysteries always seemed to have it all.
This one is set in Crete. Murders abound, along with a kidnapping, and there is, of course, a little romance thrown in for good measure. The romance is dealt with lightly, though, and never overshadows the suspense. Considering it was written in 1962, I feel the story has held up very well---not dated much. Sadly, the movie they made with Hayley Mills way back when was awful, and very different from the book, as I recall.
My favorite Mary Stewart book is and always will be This Rough Magic. which I'll probably also re-read at some point this summer!
