The End of Country: Dispatches from the Frack Zone by Seamus McGraw
Although our sliver of Central PA has not been involved in natural gas drilling, expressions such as Marcellus Shale, horizontal drilling, and fracking are becoming household terms in many parts of Pennsylvania. In The End of Country: Dispatches from the Frack Zone, Pennsylvania writer Seamus McGraw describes his experiences, and those of his neighbors, as the family farm of his childhood is leased to a natural gas drilling company. Through the initial leasing frenzy, to the actual drilling and aftermath, the author gives a clear-eyed account of the effects, both pro and con, of gas drilling on one Pennsylvania community.
The book is very well written. The author’s descriptions of the community in his corner of PA ring true, and it was impossible not to become absorbed in the stories of the colorful residents whose lives were being turned upside down.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a summer non-fiction read with a local (PA) flavor!
