People & Places

Post  The_Admin on Wed May 23, 2012 6:22 pm

Sometimes when I get writers block I think in simpler terms than the whole story, I think in terms of people and places. My daughter and I used to play a game where we would sit in the park and pick a person and create a background story for them. It could be a person on a walk or a person pushing a kid on a swing, anyone- and as we went along with building their character it got easier and easier. We'd just start with a name and an age and then go on about where the person lived and so on, the more detail we created the more ideas popped into our heads.
I also sometimes think of places i've been and then describe them. I have found I can add to that as well. I might be sitting in a coffee shop and i'll start to write about it, before I know it I have developed a background story about the owner and the people who live upstairs and their kids...it's like a snowball, you just need a place to start and people and places provide that.
