The Fall of the House of Dixie: the Civil War and the Social Revolution That Transformed the South by David Levine
Nearly one fourth of this definitive analysis of the demise of the South during the civil war is filled with bibliographic notes. Yet, it remains a matter of conjecture as to what happened to the glory that was the old South. Surely Sherman's demonic march to the sea, and his subsequent turn north to utterly destroy South Carolina, the state that caused all the turmoil, had an impact. Perhaps Lincoln's obsession to end this damnable war and restore the integrity of the Union played a role. Lincoln's untimely death was certainly a factor.
The dignity of the South was intentionally destroyed over the issue of manumission which the founders of this great country agree would have evolved in time. Unnecessary war? Lincoln fervently wished the slavery issue would just go away, preferably to Haiti or Liberia.
