The story begins in the roaring 20's and Cora Carlisle is hired as a chaperone to accompany fifteen year old Louise Brooks to New York City, where she has been accepted into a prestigious dance company. Somewhat arrogant, the beautiful Louise was constantly sulking with dramatic mood changes - disrespectful and rather brazen. She seemed to yearn for every man's attention, and was well on her way to compromising her reputation. But, she was talented and displayed much grace as a dancer.

Thirty six year old, Cora, was married to a successful attorney and struggling to keep up with the times. Deep down Cora is a sad woman, even though she is married to a seemingly charming man. A rather shocking episode is revealed about Alan, her husband, and the complexity of the story changes dramatically. Cora is also carrying deep wounds of her past and she begins to feel she has lived her life following nonsensical rules and her life is about to change.

This was a well written book and the author did a marvelous job getting into the hearts and minds of the characters. But, it took me too long to become fully engaged in the storyline. The story is full of family secrets and deception. I had mixed feelings about this book, but I have to say I was never completely enthralled with the storyline.
